Why A Pen Name Or Pseudonym Is A Good Idea
|
Credibility In Your Niche As a publisher, you are able to research and learn about many different unrelated niches e.g. dog training and making money. But your potential customers might be confused because most people are not like this and they might be disuaded from buying if they "google" your name and see that you are such a multi-tasking individual. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a different pen name for each niche. Also, the biggest internet market in the world are affluent Americans. If you have a non-American or non-English sounding name then I strongly advise you to adopt a pen name that better suits your market. Whether fair or not, people just feel more confident in buying from someone with a more familiar sounding name. Privacy For example, some people may be part-time publishers and still hold up a regular job. Even though their activities are completely legal, their employers may not be happy about their part-time activities. If you were to use your real name then a simple google search would reveal all to your current or future employers. A pen name can prevent this. Also, many publishers work from home and do not have the protection of working in an office. It is not unknown for some customers (you can never please them all) to illegally stalk or track down a publisher. If you want to protect yourself or your family then a pen name is strongly advisable. |
